Pie with ground turkey & onion

My mom makes the best “ Byrek or Pite “ . This is the Albanian name for the traditional dish that consist of  many layers of thinly stretched out dough . Typically half of the layers are put on the bottom of a round baking pan, called “Tepsi” . Then the middle, as in this case,  is filled with ground meat mixed with chopped sauté onions. Then is finished by putting the rest of the layers on top of the filling and baked until golden colored.

Needles to say the traditional pie is delicious but a lot of work and time consuming. I don’t mind the work but if I can make a shortcut and still get similar delicious results of my favorite traditional recipe, I am all for it. All the work you need to do is just 20- 25 minutes and the rest is baking. All together almost one hour . Just make this meat pie once and will it become your family’s favorite too.

Ground turkey & onions  pie


  • 2 Store bought Pie crust
    I buy one box that has 2 pie crusts inside. Using the store bought crust , cuts the preparation time almost in half.
  • 14 Oz Ground Turkey.
  • 300g or One large onion
    The onion should be chopped medium size cubes as seen on the picture below.
  • 1/2 tsp season salt or regular salt .
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika.
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil.

Cooking directions 

1- Put a medium size sauté pan over a medium size burner, high heat setting.
2- Right away put the oil in. Add the onions .
3- Mix the oil and onion. Cover the pan completely and cook for 8 minutes total .
4- Uncover the pan and mix well in the 4th , 6th and 8th minute.
The first picture below shows how onion should look after the 8 minutes are done.
5- Lower the heat to medium.
6- Add the ground turkey and cook covered for a total 6 minutes.
7- Uncover and mix well every 2 minutes. Last 2 minutes add the salt & sweet Paprika .
Make sure that the ground turkey does not stay a big lump but to be evenly mixed with onions as seen on the pictures below.

Arrangements and baking 

  • Put one pie crust on 9 inch pie baking dish . Add the filling.
  • Cover with the other pie crust and tuck together the corneres from both crusts. Makes few slits for warm air to escape. I decorated the sides by going over with the tip of a butter knife makeing the short lines all around .
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 450 degrees for 30 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let it cool until safe to touch . Cut in 8 pieces.

Calories:  2 Pie crust 1600 Calories, oil 240, onions 126, ground turkey 528 calories = 2494 Total Calories . 1/8 of the pie is around 312 Calories.

Make it a meal with a side of low calorie salad or a yougurt soup .
